His proud posture, his predatory smile and his famous grumpy expression with the piercing gaze made the Hollywood star the perfect actor of historical or religious heroes in the most important epic films in film history. But Heston also took an active part in US political life. He was initially committed to human rights and was involved with Martin Luther King in the US civil rights movement for black equality.
